What is the local accent in Solent?

By admin, 30 July, 2024

With our melting pot of many cultures and ethnic heritages, perhaps there isn't one single accent. Including those for whom English isn't their first language.

But this could be the case in any part of the UK. And regional accents are familiar: Scouse, Geordie, Scottish, Welsh, Mancunian. So what is the regional accent here in the Solent?

For those who have settled here from elsewhere and have been here for years, chances are they may have adopted a regional accent.

Or maybe not. For some, it might appear that adopting Multicultural London English accent is favoured over the local regional accent. My guess is that there is an aspiration involved here - and fair enough.

It does beg the question: if there is a Solent regional accent, could we be proud to use it? Now, or in the future should the profile of Solent be raised?
